Facts About Heart Attacks in Dogs

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

It is a fact that there are a lot of heart diseases that can be experienced by your dog. In addition, heart diseases and heart attacks in dogs are cause by virtually the same reasons why we humans can have such diseases as well like diabetes, poor diet, obesity, and old age among many others for example. And not just old dogs can have heart attacks; young dogs too can suffer from heart failure due to congenital abnormalities. As for the old dog, most of the time it can be caused by altered circulatory patterns. Read on to find out more about heart attack in dogs.

Now we may know why heart attacks happen – the coronary arteries are either blocked or being thinned out by strong plaque of fats. And when this happens, it does not allow proper blood flow towards the myocardium. The next will be, of course, heart attack or myocardial infraction. Most of the time, dogs that are obese or diabetic get to have the larger possibilities of having heart attacks in dogs.

Aside from the things mentioned above, there are also other common causes of heart attacks in dogs. And these are cardiomyopathy, heart worm, congenital heart defects, rapid degeneration of the heart valves, arrhythmia and the inflammation of the pericardium.

If you have a large dog, then he is more prone to suffer from heart diseases than smaller breeds. So if you have boxers, Great Danes, and Dobermans to name a few, then you must consider changing his diet or give him more exercise to do.

Allergies can happen with dogs – most dog owners know that. This article will explain what are the moderately easy ways on how to care for a dog who has allergies, as dogs with allergies need to have relief as soon as possible.

One thing that you should do is to know what might be the possible trigger that lets your dog have an allergic reaction. When your dog shows signs of itching, chewing, and biting, then he has the probability of being allergic to dust and other inhalants and parasites. This allergic reaction shows during the spring and fall seasons while parasites like fleas an ticks happen mostly during the summer season.

If your dog has allergy to foods then you should know what are the typical canine food that are enlisted as common allergens. These are the usual food that are considered food allergens: corned beef, soybeans, vegetables like garlic and tomato, and some other dairy products. In order for you to be enlightened you must consult your veterinarian on what your dog might be allergic to either be it food or inhalants like dust and pollen.

Lastly, always check for dog fleas as parasites are also an allergic trigger. Regularly give your dog a bathe in order for parasites to build residency on your dog’s coat and skin.

And these are the ways to take care of your dog when he has allergies.

Children And Dog Relationship Tips

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Having your own dog is like having an extra child. And if you have kids on your own now, expect to feel like you just gave birth to a new one (assuming that you are a woman). It can be chaotic as children do not know much about dogs yet (except that dogs are really cute to play with) and vice versa. You should check these children and dog relationship tips so that you would be able to balance out your day-to-day life.

If anything, it is best that you should not keep a dog in your household until your kid is 6 years old or beyond. This should be done because this is the primary age for kids to be able to understand and embrace rules on how to treat a pet dog and what should not be done to them. Now that I mentioned it, it is also best if you could educate your kid/s on how to take care of dogs: no matter how old your kid may be, the way he will treat the dog depends on how much you teach him how to treat one.

When it comes to children and dog relationships, one thing that all of the household should have is great commitment. Commitment is one key to a happy relationship. By committing yourselves in making the dog adjust to your family, the dog – which will be very dependent on you – will be one happy pet.

How To Teach Your Dog How To Sit

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

You may have seen it already somewhere and yes, letting your dog sit is one of the most basic commands that you as an owner can do. Teaching him how to sit is not even a difficult task to do and, provided that your dog is still a puppy, you can let your dog do the trick in no time. Below are the ways on how to teach your dog how to sit.

The very first step that you should do in teaching your dog how to sit is to look for a location that is quiet. That way he wont be easily distracted with other noises, as dogs can be easily get distracted with noises. And also you need to make sure that your dog is nothing short of hungry or is not needing to go to the loo; that way his attention will be all yours.

You will also be needing a treat so you must keep some handy all the time when training. If you do not have, a clicker will do as an alternative for positive reinforcement. When using a treat you can hover it on your dog’s nose and in a slow manner move it above his head. When your dog is looking at the food probably he is already sitting down. When your dog has sat down you can praise him for being a good boy and give him the treat. You need to repeat this step a few more times. After a few more times you can now add the firm command “sit” to the process. Say the commanding word priror to doing those stuff mentioned and give him praise and treat. Add few more of this and by then your dog will sit each time you say it, even without the treat.
